1 John 4:21 "And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister."
I love God. And after the birthday weekend that I had, I am overwhelmed by the love that my friends & family have towards me. And yet, I find myself struggling with people with whom I just don't seem to get along with. Disciples even, with whom remind me that we are to love one another, just a Jesus loved us... Despite the shade that I feel cast from them.. *sigh* I find it hard to LIKE them and God wants me to love them?!? *more sighs*
The feeling that I get when i'm reminded to love these former friends, isn't what God means. His love is action, and not feeling. Although we may feel great when agape love is exercised, it doesn't depend on how we feel or how others feel about us.
God sent his Son to redeem us, and Jesus gave His life for our salvation. And God knows that we love Him if we love Him... Action, not feeling.
This helps because I can "love" people with whom I may not have great feelings towards. Because if God's love was based on how He feels towards me, i'd be dead.(more later...)
