Is It Alright to Question God? 2016.10.18
I've been a christian for over 7yrs, and i've recently taken on the mentality where "if God says it, then I believe it and that settles it". I've learned through my time that "questioning God" and not listening to what He's saying, things will fall apart... and rather quickly. I've accepted the hard fact that life's simply easier when I don't "listen to Cecil" , but if I do what God wants, everything works out for the best. But does that mean that we can't question Him?
Most of us have children. We know full well that they ask a ton of questions. "Can I have a snack?" "Can I play outside?" "Why can't I do something that you can do?" They ask because they are curious and trust us. And when we answer them and it doesn't make sense to them, they ask another question.
Children are always learning, and every question comes from a desire to understand. They don't intentionally ask to challenge, but because they believe. That's a big part of what "faith like a child" means.
Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
Psalm 4:1
Questioning is ok only if we truly are looking for an answer. Someone who asks but doesn't care for an answer, is challenging. That is not believing, but undermining. Researchers ask to learn facts, and then use it to create a theory. They want to find the truth. During a cross-examination, a prosecutor asks questions to reveal the truth. This is challenging and not really asking.
If our approach in questioning God is similar to that of a researcher, then that is the right attitude to have: curious. We ask because we don't know the answers, like a child. We definitely don't want to prosecute God, assuming that we know more than He does.
God is a mystery to us because everything about Him is "infinite" - His goodness is too good, His grace too profound, His knowledge to deep, and His love too good. Our human minds can't even begin to understand Him. And although His Word describes what He's done, He's still a mystery where we'll never fully understand His Him or His Plan.
I won't argue - The Bible gives us everything we need, but not every answer. The Bible, although unquestionable, isn't clear all of the time. It's not some simple rule book (and I'm thankful for that!), and it doesn't address every problem explicitly. But it does describe the character & work of God. His word comforts & directs us, it gives us necessary truth, but not also room to wonder.
I believe that it's ok to ask God questions, as long as it's like a child - you are truly looking for an answer, and that you're willing to adjust or abandon your current thinking if God directs us so. He is the most patient & loving Father, and His heart wants us to truly learn, and sometimes, that's done through questions.
1To you, Lord, I call; you are my Rock,
do not turn a deaf ear to me.
For if you remain silent,
I will be like those who go down to the pit.
2Hear my cry for mercy
as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands
toward your Most Holy Place.
3Do not drag me away with the wicked,
with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors
but harbor malice in their hearts.
4Repay them for their deeds
and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done
and bring back on them what they deserve.
5Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
and what his hands have done, he will tear them down
and never build them up again.
6Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy.
7The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.
8The Lord is the strength of his people,
a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
9Save your people and bless your inheritance;
be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Psalm 28:1-9
