Think of Yourself Less 2016.11.20

Motivated by today's sermon...

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

Philippians 2:3

What's interesting about this scripture is that it does not comment on our own personal worth, that we are truly precious & loved by God. Rather, it implies our pride in matters& how our hearts can hurt relationships. How often do we exalt our own selves to where we cannot see ourselves, or treat others, as God has asked us to? And when that happens, our pride separates us from each other, but more importantly, from God.

Valuing others means that we get out of our own way, enough so that we can see the needs of those around us. When we exercise humility, we're able to set aside our own anxiety in "taking care of ourselves", which prevents us from reaching out to others. When we "know" that all of our worth comes from Him, we can surrender our inflated sense of self-worth, and rely on God's promise that He will lift us up in due time [1 Peter 5:6]

With God, we can do anything. So why not practice with your attitude of humility. Try putting someone else's interest first for a couple of hours, a workday, or the day.

C.S. Lewis wrote
"Humility is not thinking less of your self,
but thinking of yourself less."

Learning to think more of others, betters us so we can be lifted up by God.
